Intermediate Grades

Third through fifth grade is an important time in a child’s education as students transition and become more independent, mature learners. St. Odilia students progress from practicing basic skills to mastering them and developing more complex skills. They become more advanced readers, writers, mathematicians, and thinkers, digging deeper into topics and analyzing what they learn.

Students take classes in Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. In addition, they will receive instruction from specialists in Music, Art, STEM, Library, Technology and Physical Education.  

In Religion, we strive to help each child to recognize and appreciate the gift of God’s unconditional love and the gifts and talents they have received from God. With that realization comes the responsibility to use those gifts in service to the world community. Third through fifth grade students deepen their knowledge and understanding of spirituality and their Christian life as they are starting to prepare for their ultimate Christian Confirmation.

The learning environment changes as we introduce more elements of differentiation, recognizing the students who need more attention to learn the concepts and allowing the faster learners to grow through some guided self-study. Students will learn to adapt to changes as they switch classrooms for Science and Social Studies, preparing them for a middle school learning environment. In fourth and fifth grade, students are also separated into leveled math classes.  

Technology is a very important part of the curriculum as students use laptops, iPads, and Smartboards.
