Math Masters

St. Odilia Contact: Tom Hoffman; hoffman@stjodilia.org

What is Math Masters?

Per Math Masters of Minnesota, the competition is designed to promote excellence in thinking skills pertaining to mathematics.ÊThe purpose of the program is to challenge students and schools to use higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving abilities, and to give recognition for academic effort and achievement.ÊMath Masters includes individual and team competition in a wide range of math areas to permit students with many interests and backgrounds to excel.

Who can participate and when does the competition occur?

Any sixth-grade student who wants to participate may take a qualifying test.ÊThe students who score the highest are given the opportunity to be on the team.

The sixth-grade competition date varies from year to year, although it is always in the spring.ÊThe last two years it has been the second and third Saturday in March, respectively.ÊThe practices generally take place in the month or two before the competition.

How many teams are there?

There are either one or two sixth-grade teams each year, depending on student interest and availability. Each team consists of five members, although a team can compete with four members if there are not five students available.

What is the time and cost commitment?

This depends on the coach. Each year there are different coaches, and they set the practice schedule.ÊThey also decide what ÒhomeworkÓ the students will do before the team meets for their next practice. There is one competition per grade level which currently costs $75 per team; each student is responsible for paying $15.ÊFinancial assistance is available, if necessary.
